Ahhhh the age old question hey ladies and to all of my clients that ask .. yes I do have a little bit of cellulite when my skin is under pressure. We all do. However their is different extremes of cellulite and different scales of noticeability depending on many factors which I will explore in this article.
So what is cellulite? And how come only 10% of men suffer from it?
Cellulite is the combination of fat and collagen fibers. The reason why it is not nearly as common for men to have cellulite has to do with the way that their collagen fibers run in their lower body and other fatty deposit areas.
As you see in the diagram above mens collagen fibers run diagonally and across each other forming a net compared to a women's collagen fibers running straight up and down. Now this can differ from person to person some women will have collagen fibers that will run more diagonal similar to men and others will run straght up and down. This depends on genetics.
The straight up and down formation of women's collagen fibers forms a pocket which fat cells then grow. As fat cells increase in size it forms a tight pocket within the collagen fibers where the fat cells are tightly compacted in between. This is what gives the appearance of the dimples and orange peel of cellulite.
So to improve the appearance of cellulite comes down to two things reducing fat and improving the strength and health of collagen. Factors that can contribute to increased fat and decreased strength of collagen fibers;
Your diet alone can not determine whether or not you will have cellulite however a well balanced diet will reduce body fat and reduce inflammation in the body. Both factors decreasing the appearance of cellulite.
As we age cellulite can be more prevalent due to the decreased amount of estrogen production. Estrogen is the hormone responsible for keeping blood vessels flowing. Without as much estrogen production there is less circulation which means decreased amounts of collagen production and the breakdown of older connective tissue.
Thickness and colour of your skin
Someone with thicker and darker skin will have less noticeable cellulite compared with someone with pale thinner skin.
Body fat percentage
The higher your body fat percentage the more fat will be tightly packed in between collagen fibers increasing cellulite. The more fat you have underneath your skin the more likely it is to put pressure on your connective tissue and bulge out of weak spots.
These are just a handful of causes. So how can you decrease the appearance?
Well I'm a firm believer in the healthier and more active your lifestyle is the more you will decrease things such as fat gain and cellulite. I don't believe topical creams really do much as the problem is internal not external. To really increase your chances of decreasing cellulite you really have to start with things you can do to improve your body internally.
- Stay hydrated
- Resistance training
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Eat healthy
- Don't smoke
Ladies with tendency to store more body fat in the lower part of your body you may be able to supplement to help burn more fat in those areas as its a little harder for you to decrease fat in these areas.
