SUGAR! Sugar WILL make you fat. Sugar is the white little devil that has gone under the radar for the last decade when society has been lead to believe that FAT was making us fat, but this is not so. I guarantee if you cut out processed sugar from your diet you will start to see a big change in your health and fitness.
Looking at the image above could you really imagine eating 10 teaspoons of sugar from the sugar bowl without being sick? Most foods with high sugar content actually contain chemicals that stop you from vomiting. Some companies are so sneaky that even when you think you are not eating it you are. Some products to be aware of;
Sugar-free soft drinks
Yes! soft drinks that are sugar-free contain artificial sweetners instead of sugar. Unfortunately most artificial sweetners will still cause your insulin to spike which is the same effect that sugar has on the body. They are also highly toxic which is an issue when you are trying to lose weight.
Sauces and Condiments
Sauces are the worst for hidden sugar content. Next time you are at the store have a look at the sugar content in tomato sauce. Its unecessary and you will find the less you have the less you need. I used to drown my steaks with BBQ sauce and would not be able to eat it without it. Once I cut sugar out of my diet I dont have any sauce at all and I really enjoy the taste of a good piece of steak by itself.
Now even though fruit is a natural source of sugar and vitamins you need to be aware of how much you are eating. Don't cut fruit out of your diet just be aware that if you are eating 5 serves of fruit per day its a bit much.
Skim dairy products
One thing to keep in mind that any product that is fat-free will generally be higher in sugar. Remember fat is not the enemy here, sugar is. So when it comes to dairy you are better off sticking with full fat products (unless you are lactose intolerant of course)
Now this is a tricky one. You may not be eating processed white sugar at all but maybe eating products that contain healthier sources of sugar such as honey, agave nectar or coconut sugar. All are great alternatives but if you are eating a whole batch of paleo banana bread sweetened with agave nectar its the same thing.
I find the less sugar you eat the less you want. Thats why I always opt for more natural sources of sugar which are not addictive hence you eat less of it. Think about what you are eating. Start reading labels of ingredients. Once you kick the sugar habit you will find that your waist will get smaller you will also crave it less and your energy levels will also become more consistent throughout the day. If you find that you are crashing and craving sugar mid morning or around 3pm in the afternoon you may be eating too much sugar.
