You know what REALLY gets under my skin. Food labels. Did you know that here in Australia we do
not have really strict rules when it comes to packaging foods and the required labels. There are loop
holes and things most consumers have no idea about. Sometimes things that are on a food package is not literal in the meaning.
Let me give you some examples of what I mean by this.
The term "lite" does not necessarily mean that a product is low in fat. The "light" could be
referring to texture, colour or taste.
Claims of "low cholesterol" or "no cholesterol" on foods that contain no cholesterol anyway. Same
as "gluten free" on products that don't contain any gluten anyway. Using health trends to get consumers to buy.
"Baked not fried" is seriously there just to get you to think that the product is better for you but it
could contain just as much fat if the product was fried.
"Fresh" just means that a products has not been preserved by freezing, high temperature, chemical treatment
or canning. It may of still spent a long time in prcessing and transport still being refridgerated.
"No added sugar" means no sugar added but the product still may contain natural sugar.
"Reduced fat or salt" just has to be 25% reduction from the original product.
Remember this when you read an ingredients list, it always goes from most to the least amount of the ingredient in the product.
Start reading the ingredients lists to see whats really in the product you are buying. Your fats, sugars and salt are the ingredients you need to look out for. Sometimes though they are disguised in your ingredients list.
Fats could be disguised as the following;
Vegetable oils and fats
Full cream milk powder
Mono-, di- or triglycerides.
Some ingredients that are sugar;
Some ingredients that are salt;
Meat or yeast extract
Monosodium glutamate (msg)
I feel like this is the stuff that should be taught at school. Most people I meet would not be able to read a food label properly. Which is concerning. You should really educate yourself about what you are consuming and what you are putting into your body.
Educating yourself is KEY. Then you can pass it on to your children.
