This can be a real source of confusion for women trying to lose
There is an abundance of information out there telling you
So let me debunk this for you and make sure that when you do
workout you are maximising your results.
First of all let me say that sometimes when you think you are
burning fat often times you are not.
Fat is not the bodies first preferred fuel source and unfortunately
for us it takes the body longer to release fat to use for energy
than it does carbohydrates, muscle mass and tissue.
So not eating before certain types of workouts does not
automatically mean you are burning fat.
I used to think this way too.
I automatically assumed that when I worked out and when
I was sweating, huffing and puffing that I was "Burning Fat".
Here is what you need to know and how you can maximise
You go for a jog first thing in the morning on an empty
stomach and you run for an hour.
In this scenario you will burn more muscle than you will fat.
When you run for an hour on an empty stomach your body
needs energy right away due to the moderate to high
intensity of the exercise.
So instead of using fat for energy your body calls on
carbohydrates and muscle tissue because it is
quicker and easier for your body to break down
The more muscle mass you lose your body will start to
break down organ tissue as well.
So you would be better off to eat before going for a run
I don't ever recommend jogging for weight loss anyway.
EVER. But if you really need to then this is what I would
recommend to at least hold onto your muscle.
We need to hold onto as much muscle mass as possible to
keep your body toned and also to help boost your
HIgh metabolism equals more fat burning.
You do a resistance or weight training workout first thing in
the morning on an empty stomach.
I want you to think about the purpose of doing this type of
training for a second. We are trying to build muscle mass
to create a toned figure which will also increase your
metabolism and help you lose weight.
When you do this type of training on an empty stomach
unfortunately you are not burning fat you are burning
muscle. Its called going catabolic.
This means that you didn't get much from your workout
really. When you don't have any fuel in the tank your
body draws on carbohydrate stores in the muscle as
well as muscle tissue so you basically have burned
away what you are trying to build in that workout.
So I would suggest that if you do this type of exercise
early in the morning and you don't really like to train
on a full stomach try having a protein shake as your
body digests it within 20minutes, a banana and you
could also have some carbs at dinner time to have
fuel ready for the morning.
You go for a 50 minute walk straight after dinner.
Even though this is great to do I know that most of
you are here for one reason. To lose weight and
When you go for a walk just after eating you are
not burning fat. Instead your body is burning the
food that you have just eaten. Don't get me
wrong walking after a meal is great for digestion,
heatlh and wellbeing but from a weight loss stand
point it is useless.
The best way to maximise fat burn on a walk like
this is on an empty stomach first thing in the
morning or an hour or two after eating before your
Now I've got you mega confused.
So the reason why you burn fat when you walk
on an empty stomach and not when you
run on an empty stomach is becasue walking
is a lower intensity exercise.
This means that your body is not in desperate
need for fuel right away like it is when you
do higher intensity types of exercise. This
allows your body the time to release fat
and use that for energy because after about
20minutes you are in the fat burning zone.
Now sometimes people take this walking
again one step to far and instead of keeping
it in the low intensity fat burning zone they
ramp it up with an incline or heaps of stairs.
Remember you want to keep the intensity
low to maximise this type of exercise.
This is a very effective way to get the weight
off especially around the stomach when you
do it properly.
