My weight loss methodology is really about
Without balance you will find it very hard
to stick to something that is really restrictive.
The way that most go about losing weight
is going on a REALLY restrictive diet that
feels HORRIBLE, tastes horrible and is
just plain old horrible.
Here is where the problem lies when you
really restrict yourself.
You eventually end up binging, it can
promote body dismorphia and a really
negative relationship with food.
This happened to me.
When I trained for my fitness model
comps back in 2012. You can see in
the picture below to give you some
For me to get that physique I trained 7
days a week 1-3 times per day (not
recommended, like ever). I also was
on an extremely strict diet for 18 weeks.
Guess what happened when my
comps were over and I didn't have to
diet anymore..... I binged and I binged
For 18 weeks I had been stock piling
all the junk food that I would eat after
the comp was over. I'd find myself
looking for chocolate food porn on the
internet daily and would constantly
walk down the naughty food isle in
the supermarket picking out the things
I would eat when my diet was over.
When it was all over.
After 18 weeks of hard core dieting and
training I had 1x whole packet of tim tams,
a whole block of chocolate, pizza, wine,
some chocolate clinkers and a packet of
potato chips. That was all in one night.
I also ended up eating dessert after every
single meal for at least a week. I just
could not stop myself and I gained 10kgs.
It took my body and metabolism a year
to recover from the damage.
And I also had a severe case of body
issues. I had gone from abs to flabs
in a matter of a week which was hard.
When you get to be that lean it is very
unhealthy for women to remain in that
state for a long time so coming to terms
with the fact that I couldn't always look
like I did on stage was hard.
This was a lesson I learned through
experience and it changed the way I
approached health and fitness and
the way I teach my clients for life.
My story is a very extreme example for
you but the cycle is the same. Go on a
really restrictive diet (that you can not
maintain) and expect to binge and also
to gain the weight back on plus more
when you go back to eating normally.
So my philosophy now is this;
When it comes to eating try and find
a way to eat healthy that feels good
for your body first and foremost.
Second thing is to stop looking for
the quick fix when it comes to losing
weight and work on making long
term changes with your diet such as
getting rid of sugar, cutting back on
the alcohol consumption and cooking
more than eating out. Simple lifetsyle
changes pay off in the long run.
Third thing is to include the foods
that you love within balance. So
don't stop going to social events
and enjoying good food and don't
feel like you can't enjoy a meal you
love every now and then.
It is all about balance. Learn to
enjoy the foods you don't eat all of
the time without beating yourselves
up about it. Just jump right back into
healthy eating the very next day.
Seriously no harm done.
Don't take it so seriously. Enjoy
and live your life while you lose
weight. I assure you if you feel
happy your body will respond the
way you want it to more than it will
respond if you feel upset and
depressed all of the time.
